updating an ikea dining set
I think if you were to take a poll of anyone who has decorated a home in the past few decades, one would find that a large percentage has at one time purchased a least a single piece of furniture from IKEA. As one’s design tastes and budgets mature, the IKEA pieces are often discarded for something more aligned with current trends or more mature budgets. My friend Robert, however, decided to update his IKEA dining set purchased some 18 years ago, rather than make a complete change for something brand new.
Handy in the wood working shop, Robert first cut down the width of the table to be a better fit for his smaller dining area in his west end Vancouver condo. He then stained the wood in a more current dark tone and reupholstered the seats of the chairs in a more contemporary fabric, which surprisingly is inexpensive painter’s drop cloth purchased from a hardware store. With its clean lines, the simple makeover of this set aligns with the pared down but welcoming aesthetic of Robert’s style.
