at their peak: toronto’s high park cherry blossoms

May 15

With Toronto’s brutally long winter it almost seemed that spring flowers would never bloom. But bloom they have, including High Park’s brilliant show of cherry blossoms.  I haven’t popped by yet to see this year’s show, but checking the bloom tracking site the peak was reached yesterday, May 14. Here are a few photos I took last year, a couple of days past the peak of May 4. For more photos of these fabulous blossoms, pop on over to last year’s post

By this graphic from the High Park Nature Centre, it seems this is the latest peak date in years. Better late than never!

We went to see the blossoms yesterday and they definitely don’t appear to be at their best yet. Certainly nothing like last year, but there seem to be more buds about to burst forth! I would estimate by the weekend they will be beautiful, if the rain hasn’t already knocked the blossoms to the ground.

Thanks for the update – I wonder if the blossoms are a little less brilliant this year due to the long, cold winter? Yes, looking back at these photos from last year makes me long for warmer, sunnier weather! 🙂

I agree. Been running through the park everyday this week, with expectations of a beautiful show, but as of this morning, not so much. These trees do cycle, and perhaps this year, after the tough winter, they are taking a bit of a rest.

Agreed – after that winter, a lot of flora will need a rest! It’s incredible to see the amount and variety of plants, shrubs, and trees that didn’t fair so well. 😦
